Skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of diseases. An unhealthy amount of exposure to sun can also cause painful burns and premature signs of aging like wrinkles. But don't worry, you don't have to stay inside all day! In order to be skin and sun-savvy, you just have to know the simple facts.
You may have heard a lot about ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, which are strongest from around 10 AM to 4 PM. Although they're invisible to humans, they can do damage to our skin and eyes. It's definitely best to avoid the midday sun, but if you're going to be outside for awhile, you should invest in some sun-protective clothing, such as:
Hats with a wide brim that cover your face, neck, and ears
Sunglasses that are specifically tailored to protect against UV rays
Loose clothing that covers your legs and arms
Even if you're not going to be at the beach, sunscreen is a necessity! Picking and applying the right kind of lotion can be a tricky business since there are so many brands out there! Here's some sunscreen 101s to help you along the way:
Apply it at least 30 minutes before heading outside, so the lotion has some time to sink in to your skin
Use a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. For maximum protection, choose a brand with "broad-spectrum" label, which means you're protected from all different types of harmful rays
Apply the sunscreen to every part of your body that might be exposed.
In order to be completely effective, it needs to be applied evenly over the body. Don't forget your scalp, nose, and ears. The lips are often a neglected part of the body when it comes to applying sunscreen, but they need to be protected too! There are lots of lip balms and creams out there that can prevent nasty sores and burns. Apply sunscreen more often if you're going to be in the water. Wet skin can burn pretty easily!
If you're finicky about putting lotion on your skin, sunscreen comes in many forms that include spray bottles, gels, lotions, and creams. You can have fun in the sun, but just be conscious of you're skin while you're enjoying the weather!

What I would recommend is first a visit to a good dermatologist to see what condition your skin is in. She will then be able to recommend the proper balanced product for your skin type. As always, don't forget to moisturize and eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. These three things are very important for healthy looking skin.
As in Everything moderation
is the key.
If you want to be tan and healthy
start early in the year when sun rays are not so intense. I start in March and April, living in the south. Tan no more that 15 minutes for fair skin every other day. Shower afterwards with coolest water as comfortable, use a good moisturizer Always, everyday.
Always use cosmetics with sunscreen, and wear makeup!!!some stays on and is better than
sun taning products.
10-15 minutes of sun a few days a week will keep you nicely tanned, healthy in mind, and feeling good.
Sun as healthy.
A BIG, cotton lightweight, longsleeve shirt should be as important as your swimsuit.
Hat and shades always cool.
Legs can usually take more sun but, a large scarf tied and the hips over swim wear is flowing and sexy.
I'm over 50, look under 40 and have always tanned.
Be very weary of tanning products. BE VERY WEARY OF
TANNING PRODUCTS!
And only used for extended time in the sun, not for tanning!!!
You will soon be able to tell when you've had enough and cover up.
Rememer, you're not cooking your skin.
Final thought, you can tan sitting in the shad. And it's alot cooler.
