I had heat stroke last year, and let me tell you that is one thing I don't want to go through again. I was out for a walk and wasn't prepared well enough. I hit the ground walking...and then I simply hit the ground. After learning my lesson the hard way, I made it one of my goals to enjoy the rest of the summer, but this time do it the right way.
When it gets hot outside, you perspire. Even if you don't realize you are doing it! If you don't constantly replace the water in your body, you get weak and tired, and if it gets to a critical point where you're dehydrated, you'll feel light headed, and even have chest and/or stomach pain and possibly faint, like I did.
So be summer smart with these tips:
Dress for it! A hat and good cotton clothing that breathes will do wonders. I wear long sleeved organic cotton shirts that let the air flow through. It's a built in air conditioner!
Drink plenty of water. Soda and other drinks won't leave you as satisfied as water will. As the temperature goes up, so should your water consumption. Try not to drink ice cold water when you're hot. That can lead to stomach cramps. Cool water will cool you down just as well, if not better.
Don't get thirsty. If you drink before you're thirsty, you'll be better off, as thirst is a sign you're already showing signs of dehydration. Personally, I sip from my water bottle through out the day. It's a huge help.
Eat water-rich fruits and veggies as part of your summer diet.
Limit your time in the full sun. Remember, sunscreen may protect you from sunburns, but not from the heat of the sun. If you must do yard work, try to avoid being out in the heat for longer than 10 minutes at a time. Go inside and cool down. Better yet, do what I do and wait for a few clouds or even until the sun starts to go down.
A day outside should include a trip to the park, not the emergency room. Cool off and chill out with just a few precautions, and enjoy your summer!
