Creating Personal Daily Rituals

Schedule some time for yourself!

If you have kids, you might already know that consistent, daily rituals help them to feel safe and happy. Even if you don't have kids, you know that having order in your daily life can be a huge help in reducing your stress and for creating a sense of security. But as we become older, we tend to sacrifice that feeling of security and predictability in favor of cramming as much as possible into a 24-hour day. I know I'm definitely guilty as charged. The bad news is that in doing so, we lose that precious time that we need to re-connect with ourselves and re-charge our batteries.

The important thing to remember that when practicing our favorite ritual, like yoga, meditation, a morning walk, or even a leisurely breakfast-consistency is the key. Performing your daily routines will help you to feel a greater sense of control over your life and balance your hectic day with a healthy dose of peace and quiet.

So, if you're looking for a way to preserve your sanity, here are a few of my favorite daily rituals that help me to unwind:

Reading before bed. I used to experience awful bouts of insomnia, probably because I would replay all the stresses and worries of the day while trying to go to sleep. Reading is a great way to relieve your anxieties so you can get a good night's rest. Trust me, falling asleep with a book on your lap is a great way to zonk out.

Stretching in the morning. No, you don't have to do sun salutations if that's not your thing, but a few simple stretches are a great way to improve both your physical and mental health. Stretching can help to reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow, and increase mental clarity. What's not to like?

Take a walk. There is nothing better than an after-dinner walk, especially when I feel really full. Not only is walking a great way to burn a few extra calories, but also it's the perfect opportunity to clear your head and escape from any stresses at home.

Get a little "ME" time in. Setting aside 10-30 minutes every day to relax, meditate, chill out can be part of your daily routine and a reminder that no matter what, you need to keep yourself as your number one priority.

Daily rituals are a fantastic way to maintain a bit of consistency in your hectic life. Whether you like to unwind with a glass of wine after work or enjoy hitting the gym, see what routines work for you. By setting aside some time for yourself each day, you will definitely see a difference in your personal happiness level.

I spend 30-60 minutes in the morning working out (alternating aerobics and weight/resistance) and focus on gratitude, working my way to picturing the people I love and how to enrich their lives and finally ending with how I see a successful day unfolding and a prayer of thanks for that, as if I already have it, as certainty helps to manifest what we perceive. If I do NOT get this morning 'hour of power' as Tony Robbins calls it, or even 15 minutes, I am frazzled until I can go and meditate for a few.
