Feng Shui for Balanced Home Living

Work yin and yang into your color scheme
Feng Shui

The term "Feng Shui", meaning "wind-water", is the ancient practice of arranging objects in your home and environment to achieve absolute harmony. Many feel Feng Shui may have a strong influence on personal relationships, health, wealth and overall well being.

The Yin-Yang Theory is an important part of Feng Shui. According to an ancient Chinese belief, the universe consists of the Yin and Yang-two opposite (but connected) forces. To obtain the best possible energy, these two forces should be in balance. The Yin embodies passive energy, meaning it involves relaxation, darkness, and silence. In contrast, the Yang represents active energy that is characterized by strong colors, lights, and motion.

In our busy, frenzied culture, we often have an overabundance of Yang energy and not enough of the replenishing Yin. In order to make your home harmonious, you should have an equal distribution of both forces. For instance:

Yin energy is ideal in the bedroom because it's the space where you need to relax and rejuvenate. In order to foster a silent and calming environment, you should get rid of some of the more excessive Yang elements in the room, such as a TV or work-related belongings. Think relaxation, sleep, and comfort when you're decorating your bedroom. However, it's also important to have some Yang elements in order to create some balance. Red candles and a few hotter colors will do the trick. When decorating your bathroom, the same principles apply.

Yang energy is perfect for the living room, kitchen, home office, and other rooms in the house that should have lots of vibrant energy. In order to Feng Shui these rooms, decorate with strong colors, books, games, and whatever else will contribute to keeping you lively and happy. Conversely, add a little Yin, or a relaxing element, into these rooms so the Yang doesn't become overly dominant. Try adding some cushions and particularly comfortable furniture in the room.

Before you start to decorate, remember the purpose of each room. Do you need the room to help you relax or entertain? When you're through, make sure you have a home that makes you feel truly happy!

Interesting that the photo is a bonasi tree. In Feng Shui, this is not a good thing to have in your home as the tree is twisted and growth has been stunted. A better plant would be a Jade plant, a money tree, or any plant with lush rounded leaves.
