Gifts For That Special Someone

How to choose the perfect present
gift for significant other

It's that gift-giving time of the year. The holidays mean presents all around, but with that comes the pressure to choose the perfect gifts for everyone on your list. There isn't a doubt that your significant other ranks at the top of said list, but falls somewhere near the bottom in terms of ease of gift selection. Why is it that the person who we appear to know best is the most difficult person to buy for? When it comes to buying a gift for a boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife, some of us are tempted to choose an over-the-top gift that represents our relationship's value. Others tend toward practical and functional gifts that will be used often. In truth, the best gifts for a significant other successfully merge the qualities of usefulness and luxury.

Are you the type who tends to overspend when it comes to your special someone? While there's nothing wrong with giving generous gifts, don't fool yourself into thinking that you need to wrack up outrageous bills to demonstrate your love during the holidays. There's no need to succumb to the pressure to give a diamond bracelet or a gold watch, in spite of what is suggested by television commercials. The tricky - and frustrating - part about gift-giving is that the best gifts are the ones that require the most thought, and often the least cash. It's far easier to run out and buy a pricey item than it is to think long and hard about what gift would be most meaningful. But because you want to give your significant other the best, spend time on your selection and don't settle on the first thing you see, even if it's been designed to impress.

If you err on the side of the conservative when selecting a gift for your sweetie, you're likely channeling just how intimately you know one another. You have the ability to pinpoint the objects that he or she needs, but hasn't gotten around to purchasing: a belt that isn't worn out, a sturdier laptop case, a new set of stationary. These gifts aren't as boring as socks and ties, but they lack a bit of the desired spice. One way to resolve this problem is to choose elegant versions of everyday basics, so your special someone can experience a bit of luxury day-to-day. If it's a belt he needs, spend a little extra on a designer version that will be worn for years. If she loves writing letters but lacks stationary, choose an elegant, high-quality brand and get it personalized.

If you're feeling confident, you might go for the unexpected this year. Think out of the box and consider indulging an interest, hobby or curiosity that your significant other has expressed. A wine lover might love a sommelier course, while a foodie would be thrilled with a tasting menu at a favorite restaurant or an ethnic cooking class. Think broadly and you'll be surprised at what you come up with. Above all, keep in mind that your significant other is often the person to whom you can communicate most easily, so if you're truly in a rut this season, consider getting your gift-selecting woes out in the open. As a couple, you might nix the gift all together and put your funds toward something you can share, such as a vacation, dinner out, or a big-ticket item that you both have had your eyes on. Happy gifting!

You might also try making something for your significant other that he/she enjoys but doesn't have often- maybe a homemade cookie or candy treat, or if you are crafty maybe a hand knitted item or create your own stationery with stamping kits or drawings: if you make your gift it is going to be that much more personal than buying it and every time it is used it will be a constant reminder of how special you think your other is.
