Homemade Holiday Cranberry Sauce

Easy to make and good for you, too!
cranberry sauce

Cranberries are tart, red and delicious, and part of almost every holiday meal. Terrific in pies, muffins and sauces, these little jewels are not only great to cook with, they're really good for you too!

Cranberries are known to help prevent and soothe bladder and other urinary infections. The tannins in the berries also help inhibit the growth of bacteria in the stomach, such as h-pylori which is commonly found in stomachs with ulcers. The flavenoids in cranberries also help prevent clogged arteries and cancer.

So now that you know it's good for you, let's start cooking!

Homemade Cranberry Sauce

1 12-oz bag of fresh cranberries
1 cup granulated sugar
1 small apple, peeled and chopped small
1 medium orange, juiced and zested
1 lemon, juiced and zested
½ cup golden raisins
pinch of cloves
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup water

Cooking:

In a large pot, add water, cranberries, sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Cook over medium heat for 5-8 minutes. The skin of the cranberries will start to burst.

Add the apple, juices, zests and raisins. Stir well and cook on low for 10 minutes.

Remove from heat and let cool. Spoon into a dish and chill.

This is great served with turkey, chicken, or any meat dish. It's even good in those turkey sandwiches the day after the holiday dinner!
