Navigate the Holiday Office Party

Stay festive and appropriate
office party

Attending the holiday office party is a celebration, but it also could be a nerve-wracking event. Who should you approach to talk, and what topics are off limits? How much of the party is fun, and how much is considered business? What should you wear, and how long should you stay?

Although this office party is a celebration of the holidays, and intended as a social event, it’s important to remember that it’s still a business event and essentiallyan extension of the workplace. Don’t pass up the chance to attend. Spend a half an hour at the least, and if it’s a dinner, stay for the meal. Enjoy your time with co-workers, all while continuing to act professionally.

Remain Professional

Enjoy yourself at the party but remember that this isn’t the time to let too loose. While you certainly don’t want to spend the entire evening discussing business, it’s definitely not OK to gossip or to spend time complaining or ridiculing others. It’s also your best bet to avoid bringing up any controversial topics, including religion, politics, or off-color jokes that could offend others. Don’t treat the office party as if it were a singles bar, and be sure to avoid any inappropriate behavior, like flirting with co-workers that could be taken the wrong way.

When it comes to determining what to wear to the office’s holiday party, always play it safely with appropriate, conservative attire. It’s neither the time nor place to wear anything too flashy or revealing, like a low-cut dress or see-through top. Simply remember to maintain your professional appearance.

Alcohol will most likely be provided at the event, but remember that this isn’t an open invitation to imbibe. Lowering your inhibitions too drastically could mean trouble for your professional career. Consider the last time you (mistakenly or otherwise) drank to excess: Would you want your co-workers, especially your boss, to see you like that? If you get drunk and act foolishly, no one will forget. Eat beforehand, so you’re not drinking on an empty stomach, and stick to one mixed drink or a glass of wine, even if you believe you can handle your alcohol (it’s best to not take any risks). Moderation is best, so don’t hungrily attack the food buffet, either. Sample food items that are easy to eat with one hand, while standing, and keep your drink in your left hand so you don’t offer a cold, wet handshake. And remember that you could always eat and drink more with others later on after the office party.

Take Advantage

As tempting as it might be to stay within your comfort zone, the office holiday party is a great opportunity to network with others whom you might not normally see on a daily basis, such as top management and people from other departments and locations, in a less formal setting and advance your career in the process. Circulate the room, introduce yourself to others, build your network, and strengthen work relationships with others.

By handling this social situation well, you are also demonstrating your ability to handle business situations that are social in nature, which is something that’s required of many senior employees.

Before leaving, thank your host, the boss, for an enjoyable evening.

Have a great time at your office’s holiday party, but don’t damage, or risk, your career. Since layoffs still loom before so many employees, unfortunately, it’s your best bet to be on your best behavior.
