It's hard to believe summer is coming to an end and back-to-school season is already here. We all want to make sure our kids are heading off to knowledge-land prepared with everything we can give them for a healthy and happy day.
Unfortunately, a lot of school supplies such as backpacks and binders may be doing your child more harm than good. You may not realize it, but a lot of school supplies are made out of a plastic compound called polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which, when being produced or burned, actually contaminates the air and water with chemicals like lead, phthalates, and cadmium, that can lead to cancer, harm your immune system and reproductive system.
Thankfully there is something you can do about this! The Center for Health, Environment and Justice (CHEJ) has created a Back-to-School Guide for PVC-Free School Supplies. This handy guide lists the most common back-to-school supplies made out of PVC, as well as PVC-free alternatives.Feel good as you send your kids back to school, knowing that you're doing good for their future health.
