Red, White or Green Tea, If You Please

Is there really a difference?
tea

I was officially confused. These days, everyone is touting the health benefits of tea, but there are so many different types! Who knew a tea bag could be so complicated? I've heard red, green, and white tea are all really good for you, but I wasn't sure how to choose the right one for me. Well, for all you tea people who are in the dark, I present to you my findings-

Most of you have probably heard of green tea. Unlike most other varieties, green tea is dried instead of fermented. Since this type of processing takes less time, green tea is noticeably lighter in flavor. The process of drying makes green tea much healthier too, since all the healthy chemicals and antioxidants are kept intact. Green tea has loads of health benefits due to its high antioxidant content, which means it may help to prevent cancer and heart disease. For those of us who have trouble getting up in the morning, rest assured, green tea contains caffeine.

White tea is becoming more and more popular these days. Like green tea, it undergoes very little processing and no fermentation, but the taste is much different. White tea is distinctively light and a little sweet, and contains much less caffeine than its counterparts. The big news is white tea is shown to have even more cancer-fighting antioxidants than green tea, so you might want to give this variety a try if you are drinking tea to improve your health.

Red tea is the wild card. Indigenous to South Africa, tea from the Aspalathus Linearis plant is naturally caffeine-free. Its fruity and smooth taste makes for a great drink at any time of day. Best of all, red tea contains no oxalic acid, so it's a great option for people with digestive problems. Red tea is said to help soothe the stomach, boost your immune system, and ease nervous tension. (Note: always check the package of tea to see that you really have a caffeine-free blend)

Whether you choose green, white, or red, you really can't lose. You can reap loads of health benefits from drinking any of these teas, it's just a matter of preference. So why not ditch the coffee habit in favor of some healthful, refreshing tea?

Alexandra - please speak with your obgyn about whether or not you can or should be drinking tea. We cannot give you that kind of advice.

Patricia - Well, there are studies that do say green tea helps raise the metabolism which helps burn calories a little faster, but the verdict is out about just how effective it really is.
