Staying Chic in the Cold

How to look stylish when you're dressing for warmth
layering clothing

You've heard it before, but let's not forget: in cooler weather, layering is key. Lucky for us that so much of the casual style today, from street to runway, is packed with examples of how to look effortless in layers. Rather than stow away all of your tanks and tees until spring, keep those cotton basics in rotation by wearing them as the foundation layers in your winter look. When layering, keep in mind that you should play with lengths and lines. A long tank under a shorter, contrastingly-colored long-sleeved tee is a fun way to show color. A sweater on top seals in the warmth, and the whole look isn't unnecessarily heavy.

Be sure to keep a few gorgeous (and functional) pieces on hand to give your winter wardrobe some personality. Boots are absolutely the essential winter accessory and they have the potential to add attitude to a dress and substance to a pair or leggings or jeans, all while feeling warm and comfortable. Check out waterproof suede options (since you're likely to wear them in snow), chunky equestrian or motorcycle styles or sleek up-to-the-calf (or even the knee) styles, with a wedge heel that will keep them functional. And if you're finishing your look with stylish boots, feel free to wear your thickest, comfiest pair of socks underneath. Who will know you have them on?

Accessories often make the outfit, regardless of season, so we can't forget to given them a mention. Luxe leather gloves, sparkly or super-soft scarves and chunky knit hats or berets look fantastic and are warming to wear when you're about to brave the cold. If your outerwear is a neutral color, you might choose accessories in bright hues, which are welcome pops of color on a dreary day. To be more dramatic, try pairing a coat that has bracelet-length sleeves with elegant, elbow-length gloves.

Finally, while often a splurge, a winter coat that makes a statement (and keeps out the chill) is worth its weight in gold. Peacoats and down jackets are tried-and-true choices, but there's something to be said for finding a coat that is stylish on its own. Regardless of how much you're wearing underneath, you'll be certain that you look polished every time you leave the house if your coat is unique. Look for styles with a cinched waist that will better define your shape, or an A-line coat that will look feminine and pair well with dresses and skirts.

Above all, have fun with your winter wardrobe. Try and try again until you find the styles that work for you. You might spend an hour or two making different outfits that combine lengths, textures and colors to find the looks that are both cute and cozy!
