Stop Swearing Off Dating

Gentle ways to get back into the game
dating

Sometimes dating can be a daunting experience, creating feelings of dread in even the most self-assured person. And if you've had a string of bad experiences or have just ended a long term relationship, you may think you'll never want to date again. But before you decide to swear off dating for good, take into consideration some gentle ways of getting back into the game.

Take a vacation from dating

You heard right...take a break and let yourself recover from dating burnout. Spend the time you would have spent on dates doing things you really enjoy. Work out at the gym, go to a concert or socialize with friends. Don't think about dating and allow yourself this time to regroup.

Avoid Negative Self-Talk

You may look back on failed dating experiences and find yourself saying, "I'll never find someone," or "There must be something wrong with me." Be aware of these patterns and challenge that negative self-talk.

Keep Your Expectations Real

We all tend to fantasize about an ideal partner, but sometimes that fantasy is unreasonable. If your requirements are too rigid, such as someone who looks a certain way or makes a certain amount of money, you are most likely setting yourself up for failure. Think of qualities that are important to you, but remain open-minded.

Find Support

Talk to people you feel close to about your plans for dating. Share your feelings with them and seek their advice and support. Who knows? They may even know someone who's a good match for you.

Find Like-Minded People

What better way to get back into dating than finding people with similar interests? Sign up for a class or join a club or a community organization. Not only will it be personally enriching, you will also be expanding your network in a safe, pressure-free environment. And who knows? You might meet someone special when you're not even looking!
