Taking Care of those Pearly Whites

Ways to keep your teeth bright and healthy

We all want to have a gorgeous smile, and one way achieve this is by taking good care of your teeth. Beyond the aesthetics, good dental hygiene is also an important factor to overall health. Researchers have found that periodontal or gum disease, can increase the risk for heart disease. Aside from regular brushing, flossing and dental exams, there are steps you can take every day to achieve and maintain a white, healthy smile.

Brush for at least two and a half minutes each brushing. Most people don't brush their teeth long enough but too quick a brushing can leave bacteria causing plaque behind. If you have to, keep a timer in your bathroom and set it before you start brushing.

Gargle with apple cider vinegar each morning before you brush. This helps to remove stains and kills bacteria. Cleaning your tongue with a tongue scraper every morning is also a great way to remove bacteria. If you have to use mouthwash, opt for an alcohol-free mouthwash. Mouthwash containing alcohol can dry out your mouth and leave it susceptible to bacteria.

Eat foods that naturally clean your teeth such as raw carrots, celery and apples. These are especially good to eat if you've just had a meal and can't brush right away. Green tea contains healthful flavonoids that naturally kill bacteria, so sip a cup or two each day. And don't forget to make sure you get enough calcium in your diet with such foods as non-fat yogurt, spinach and soybeans. And stay away from coffee. It's terrible for your the color of your teeth.

Teeth whitening products can temporarily brighten your smile, but be aware the overuse of these products can damage tooth enamel. A gentler, natural alternative is to brush your teeth once a week with baking soda.

Take steps to take good care of your teeth and dazzle the world with your brilliant smile!
