Kicking it up a notch
Susan Weiner

I was so glad to read your responses to last weeks posting on the 100 Push-Up Challenge. It's great so many of you are joining the challenge and I really look forward to hearing about your results!

Last night I completed Day 1 of Week 2 training and I can tell you it isn't getting any easier for me. That's ok ... I guess it is why they call it a "challenge", right? What did I expect after all that fun in Italy?

With the boot camp out in Los Angeles quickly approaching, I'm going to start kicking it up a notch. In addition to the push-up challenge I have decided to try my hand at taking a spin class which is something I dread. While I am a fairly avid cyclist on the streets of New York, spin classes have always intimidated me. I have to admit that I'm more than a little nervous about taking my first class next week, but we all need to get out of our comfort zone at times. If anyone has any tips for me on how to manage this new experience, they are more than welcome!

I also decided I need to clean up my diet as I must admit that I indulged a bit over the fourth of July weekend. How could I resist? I can't always be completely focused. I came across a website, The World's Healthiest Foods, and found some really great recipes I'm going to try over the next couple of weeks. My goal is to lose another 3 lbs before I leave for Los Angeles, which is quite possible since my trip is over 5-weeks away. Now, if only I could stay away from the hot dogs and hamburgers!

Stay strong.

Peace.

Good luck with the boot camp. what kind of boot camp is it? I am trying so hard to exercise and eat good but my boss and friend seem to tell me that i eat to much or what i am eatting is wrong. i know that she is only trying to help but i am getting frustrated Aand the more she tells me that carbs and dairy are bad for me, the more i want to eat them. Can someone please help me understand what is right as far as what to eat. i love breads, dairy, meats, and sweets every now and then. thanks for your time.

I accidentally deleted your 100 push ups email. Will you reprint it for those of us who are genuinely interested just too quick to hit the delete key?

I love the challenge

I too have started the pushup challenge. In 3 days, I celebrate my 58th Birthday. Next month, 40th class reunion. I want to go as the youngest kid in the class. My mind and spirit are not ready for my flabby arms. I've completed week #1. Hope I can keep it up.

Carrie,

I do not personally agree that an entire food group can be "bad". There are however better choices that an individudal can make.

For instance, I get my carbs from vegetables, fruits and whole grains such as Ezekiel bread, quinoa, 100% whole wheat couscous, and brown rice. For dairy I focus on low-fat.

You need to start this journey by doing a little number crunching. Go to a search engine and search for BMR. Use that formula to ascertain how many calories per day you can consume and maintain your current weight.

Once you know that number, through diet and exercise you can begin to lose weight.

With that said, it's important to NEVER consume less than 1200 calories per day, as you'll slow down your metabolism. This is why you need to exercise ... to help burn calories. To lose one pound, you need a calorie deficit of 3500 calories, which should be easily accomplished over the course of 1 week.

I realize this is alot of information. Please don't hesitate to ask questions!!

Stay strong.
Peace.
