Women and the Moon

The divine connection
women's connection with the moon

You might have heard that the 28-day cycle of your body is highly connected with the cycle of the moon. In the days before light pollution and electricity, many people attest to the theory that the bodies of women were heavily influenced by the light of the moon.

A connection between our hormones and the moonlight, you may ask? No, it's not impossible! We all know that light has a profound impact on plants and animals, and the same goes for human bodies. Back in the days when artificial light was non-existent, women usually cycled together. The reverence of the moon seemed to transcend all cultures and religions. In fact, for as long as women have been getting their periods, there have been countless stories surrounding the connection between women and the moon.

Even the etymology between our cycles and the moon is related. The words for moon, month, and menses all derive from the root "mens"!

Modern science has since rejected these cultural claims, but some questions still remain. Those who still adhere to the belief that the moon influences menstruation point out that the moon is no longer a significant source of light in urban areas. In fact, women who work during night shifts often experience irregular cycles because they are exposed to overly strong artificial light during the night hours. Light and darkness might very well have a significant impact on human physiology; the menstrual cycle, in particular. Many different cultures and traditions have associated the cycles of the moon with the human lifecycle from birth to death.

Every person is different, so pay attention to the moon to see where you lie on the spectrum!

I am wondering how the tide changes affect a woman, and a man for that matter. our bodies are, what, 80% water and the moon plays a part with that as well as the tides. I live in Alaska where we have a huge tide change every twelve hours. I've heard that we have the most drastic tidal changes each day than any other part of the world. So I think that has a part to play in the mood changes for those who live in Alaska, more than any other state or country. anyone ever hear of such a thing? If so send information, I'd like to hear it. thanks

Yes indeed, many cultures and traditions have associated the cycle of the moon with the human lifecycle from birth to death. For us Wiccans, pagans; Maiden, Mother and Crone. Three beautiful stages in a females lifetime. We also celebrate 13 full moons. Hve you ever noticed how many menstrual cycles you have a year? 13.
Blessed be!

I have always believed strongly in this and it is no surprise to me that women are influenced by the moon and its cycles. However, I do believe also that it is not just the moon. The sun and the absorbtion of vitamin D is vital to us as well. When we all can realise that we are part of the world around us and not seperate from it. We will be better rounded and healthier people. My suggestion is that we give our natural light sources the credit they deserve and try to be in their presance as much as we can on a daily basis.

Wow ,great article! My astrological sign is cancer, I am a moon child born just before daylight. I have always been totally fascinated by ancient peoples beliefs and religions, as well as current civilizations. I've always been into astrology, moon/sun, the universe and stars. I feel wilder on a full moon and when my pms hits on a full moon----the earth shakes! and as you know ladies -- That can happen a few times a year! Thank you again for the great article. Until the next full moon!

Yes, we must all give credit to the sun as well for our necessary vitamins and the great feeling of warmth we get from it--not to mention it is our daily, free, and most awesome light source. I love the nice glowwing, healthy tan it gives me--I look tired and dead without a tan. I love being outside in the sun and fresh air, it,s --good for you. Just be carefull to use sunscreen!!!! (we have a thinning ozone and skin cancer is not a joke.} But I have found that when I am sick, crampy, or just cranky--sitting out in the sun will usually make me feel alot better!

i am fair and have skin cancer-low light will dimish the amount of serotonin we get
which can lead to depresion.i have also noticed that a lot of people change behavior on the full moon-we are made of 75 per cent water-the moon contrls the tide so why not affect us-i believe in this--i try to make it a point to view the phases of the moon as it is very fascinating to me
i know there are 13 moons a year as some months have 2 full moons-our world is so full of wonder

I am Wiccan & I was taught long ago that a woman's menstrual cycles were called "the blood of the moon" I have always tespected the moonlight (or lack of it) .

I agree with DS in that the world is so full of wonder, and give condolences... I am a student majoring in Vocal Performance, and I too am influenced by the moon. The moon rules my emotlions, because I am a person with "CancerRising" in my star sign, I get more emotional, I've noticed, also when the moon is in the full phase, and therefore I sing better.
