Workshop Your Goals for 2010

Take time out to focus on your dreams this year - and make them happen!
goals

New year, big goals. Many of us enter the year full of ambition but find that day-to-day obligations and an endless to-do list prevents us from devoting time, energy and attention to our goals. Is there a way to stop the cycle this year? Many people who have used goal-oriented retreats and workshops to realize their dreams would answer, "yes!" Find out what they can do for you.

Just what can a retreat or workshop provide? Foremost, participating in a workshop brings focus to your goals. In this particular sense, a goal-focused retreat may work most efficiently, allowing you uninterrupted time to cultivate plans and ideas away from routine obligations. A retreat or workshop is often lead by a life coach or team of professionals trained to help you identify aspirations and develop a solid plan of action to realize your goals in the coming weeks, months and even years. During such an event, you are also likely to discuss a long-term picture of what you would like your life to look like, as well as the place you want to hold in the world.

While these topics may seem difficult to broach on your own, with the help of brainstorming exercises and individual and group discussion, you may gain definitive perspective. Skills you may also hone during a workshop or retreat include scheduling, prioritizing, negotiating and networking, which are often keys to success. Choose for an event tailored to your goals and your needs, whether it be general leadership or development of a specific skill. Information on retreats and workshops, from companies like Freedom Personal Development or New Mountain Ventures, can be found online. Online business social networking forums like Linkedin and Biznik also offer regular information about goal-oriented events on a local and national scale.

If a retreat or workshop is cost-prohibitive for you, look for local events, held by business owners to attract new customers or by a public library or community center, that provide an opportunity to focus on your goals at little or no cost. If you don't see goal-oriented programs offered in your area, suggest them to local leaders or speak to a human resources representative at your workplace about offering such programs to employees.

All in all, it's often only lack of time and positive reinforcement that prevent us from reaching our goals. Investing in a retreat or workshop to foster our ambitions is one way to optimize the conditions for success.

Remember, you and your dreams deserve it!
